Somebody in this family is getting a PhD

My family strongly believes in the pursuit of higher education and attainment of advanced degrees. That stated, it is interesting, at least to me, that no one in the family has ever sought a doctorate of philosophy. At a family gathering, not too long ago, one of my mother's cousins told me that I would be the first in the family to earn a PhD. I was somewhat taken aback by this revelation because the majority of my family members have advanced degrees. I hail from a family of 'legacy' thinkers and degree acquirers. As I scanned the room and took mental note of all in attendance, I went down the degree check list in my mind, "Double Master degrees 6, Lawyers (JD) 4, MDs 6, Educators (EdD) 3,..." and the list continued. I thought about the family members who were spread across the various parts of the world and came up blank. "OK, wait, what about the folks who are no longer with us?" I thought I should follow-up with one of the older members of the family. Well after some research, I found out that we did not have a PhD in the family and I would have the distinction of being the first to attain one. I deeply pondered the thought... I heard the many voices of my family in my head saying in unison "Somebody in the family is getting a PhD, and it is you!" :-)
